Shagbaor Hycent Amool
Founder and editor of We Speak Sustainability. Environmental engineer and doctoral researcher.
Shagbaor Hycent Amool is an environmental engineer and doctoral researcher in Environmental Engineering at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), Canada. His research studies aerobic granular sludge treating brewery wastewater, and whether valuable biopolymers such as curdlan can be recovered from it, turning a waste stream into a resource.
He holds an MSc in Global Sustainability Engineering (Distinction) from Heriot-Watt University, UK, funded by a Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship, and a first-class BEng in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering from the University of Agriculture Makurdi (now Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi), Nigeria.
He is a Lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic Wannune, Nigeria (on study leave), where he has taught agricultural technology, sustainable design and engineering materials, and the founder of Via Scholaris, an online learning platform. He is a member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the International Association of Engineers.
He started We Speak Sustainability because the people doing the most practical sustainability work are often the least visible in the evidence that shapes policy.
Talks and briefings
Shagbaor is available to speak with governments, international organisations, universities and community groups about what grassroots sustainability action can teach policy and practice. Possible topics:
- What grassroots action can teach climate and development policy: Evidence from the archive on what communities actually do, what it costs, and what makes ideas travel.
- Replication, not just inspiration: How small, documented actions can be adapted across countries, and what gets lost when they are scaled carelessly.
- Remembering environmental defenders responsibly: How to document lives lost in environmental defence with care, evidence and respect.
- Wastewater as a resource: Circular-economy engineering: recovering value from industrial wastewater.
